Tonight’s robotics club practice had a heavy emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). Most of the discussion was focused on what STEM is.
STEM is an education push initiated by the US government to make sure that our children are prepared for the world of tomorrow.
Robotics Club Team Practice Summary
The first thing I did tonight was have the kids assemble the Vex IQ field as a team. I offered help only when they were stumped.
I presented the idea of STEM. We then discussed what it is for and why it is important. We then discussed the 5 major branches of engineering: Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Specialized. Finally, we discussed what robotics is and the three main ways robots are operated (teleoperated, autonomous, and hybrid.)
After the discussion I passed out a handout and worksheet. We broke into 2 teams to complete them. We then went over the answers and made sure everyone was in agreement. Afterwards we spent time driving the robots with each student getting a chance to drive both.
